The Bergenfield Fire Department protects 26,000 residents in the Borough, which is located in the northeast part of Bergen County, NJ and is approximately 7 miles from New York City. The fire department consists of three independent fire companies and a career staff that makes up the Bergenfield Fire Department. Each company has a maximum size of thirty (30) members and the career staff currently has seven (7) members.
The Department responds in excess of 700 calls per year. The Borough is made up of single family homes, multi-family homes, apartments, condos, town homes, commercial structures, strip malls, supermarkets, senior citizen housing, houses of worship and various businesses scattered throughout the community. Even though CSX railroad cuts the town in half, the east side and west side designations of town use Washington Avenue for the split. Main Street is the marker used for giving us the north and south designations. Prospect Fire Co. No. 1 and Alert Fire Co. No. 1 are located on the west side of town. Bergenfield Fire Co. No. 2 is located on the east side. Bergenfield is approximately 2.2 square miles and is surrounded by Dumont, New Milford, Teaneck, Englewood and Tenafly.
We respond to calls as stills and generals. A "still" response is one company responding within their assigned district or out of town on mutual aid. A "general" alarm gets all three fire companies and will bring 4 engines, 2 trucks and one heavy rescue. If sufficient manpower is available, we can have an additional truck respond.
