Fire In A Multiple Dwelling

Posted on September 25, 2008
The Bergenfield FD responded at 2052 hrs to numerous callers reporting a fire on the second floor of a three story occupied multiple dwelling with possible victims trapped.  Deputy Chief Byrnes (DC1) was first on scene and reported a working fire.  Ladder 742 under the command of Lt. Saito immediately entered the building upon their arrival and conducted a primary search of the fire apartment that turned up negative. FF J. Kirsch was able to locate the fire and keep in check with a water can as Engine 745 under the command of Captain Lodato stretched an attack line into the apartment and knocked down the main body of fire. Lt. Buehler and his crew from THE Rescue handled search and ventilation on the third floor along with Captain Lopez and his crew from engine 744.  Captain Lanzilotti and his crew from 743 along with Lt. Hoyt and his crew from 747 handled the secondary search and overhaul of the fire room.

Chief Gomez had command requested mutual aid from Dumont, Teaneck and Englewood to cover the town and an F.A.S.T. team from New Milford.  There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians, but all the residents were displaced for the night due to PSE&G shutting down the electric to the building.  The Fire Official determined that the cause of the fire was an extension cord used for the air conditioner.
