Report Of Smoke In Apartment

Posted on April 8, 2008

At 19:16 hrs the Bergenfield FD was dispatched on a general alarm assignment for report of smoke in an apartment at the Senior Citizens building located at 293 Murray Hill Terrace.  DC 2 (Kniesler) arrived first and made his way to the third floor where he found an odor of paper burning.  Engine 744 was first due and they established a water source using the yard hydrant and hooking up to the stand pipe. Ladder 742, Engine 745 and the Rescue sent their crews to the third floor. Smoke was found in an apartment and a line was stretched and charged.

Chief Gomez (740) arrived on scene and assumed command while Deputy Chief Byrnes took over operations on the fire floor.   Engine 743’s crew was sent to the 2nd and 4th floors to check for smoke and then to assist the crews on the third floor.  The Operations Chief and Captain Lodato searched the apartment and found the source of the smoke.  The smoke was from a box of tissues beginning to burn on top of a toaster oven.  The item was moved and quickly extinguished before causing any major damage. Units used fans to clear the apartment and hallway of any remaining smoke and were cleared of the scene in 45 minutes.
