Fire At 143 Howard Drive

Posted on March 9, 2008

At 2130 hrs, the Bergenfield Fire Department was dispatched on a general alarm assignment for the reported fire in the boiler room.  Deputy Chief Byrnes and Firefighter Jim Kirsch were the first to arrive on scene and reported a fire in the boiler.  Chief Gomez arrived and assumed command and requested a 2nd alarm assignment to cover the borough.  Engine 745 was first due and was instructed to come directly into the scene and pull a 1 ½ attack line.  Engine 744 hit the hydrant and supplied 745. Units immediately went to work opening the boiler up and extinguishing the fire while the truck company opened the roof above.  All units were engaged at the scene and worked to evacuate all the residents from the affected building.

The Red Cross was contacted and was working with ownership to relocate the residents until heat could be restored to their apartments.   Dumont Engine 5, Teaneck Engine 1 and Englewood Truck 1 responded to Alert fire house and covered the borough while the New Milford FD responded into the scene as the FAST team.  The scene was cleared in 2 hours.
