On Friday night February 3, 2006, the Bergenfield PD was dispatched to Pleasant Avenue to investigate a strange odor. Two blocks away on Porter Avenue, members of Prospect Fire Co. No. 1 were drilling at a house donated by a resident. Chief Hartung notified dispatch that the smell could be coming from FD units who were using a smoke machine. Dispatch notified the Chief that the resident thought the smell could be gas. Chief Hartung responded from Porter Avenue and requested the units from Porter Avenue to respond. Engine 745 responded first and began walking the block investigating a strong odor of gas. Units found that one block over, on Hillside Avenue, a resident had spilled gas in his driveway. Units were off the scene in 30 minutes.
