Small Fire In Basement

Posted on June 22, 2007
On Friday night at 21:22 hrs, the Bergenfield FD was dispatched on a general alarm to 42 Sugden Street for a report of smoke in the house. Deputy Chief Byrnes (D2) was first on scene and reported a smoke condition in the house. The first due engine, 745 layed a line from the hydrant and stretched an attack line. Members entered the structure and made their way through the house room to room looking for the source of the fire. Firefighter Nancy Naylis checked the bathroom and found a burned wicker basket next to the commode, a scorch mark on the tile wall and a partially scorched commode as well. The commode tank had exploded out the bottom and extinguished the fire in the wicker basket. The basket and commode were a total loss and there was minor water damage to the upstairs bathroom and hallway as well as minor water damage to the ceilings below. Units operated on scene for about 90 minutes.
