Home Escape Planning Tips

Posted on March 11, 2009

1.                  Draw a home escape plan and discuss it with everyone in your home

  2.                  Practice the plan night and day, twice a year.

  3.                  Know at least two ways out of every room.

  4.                  Make sure all doors and windows open easily.

  5.                  Practice finding your way out of the house with your eyes closed, crawling or staying low and feeling your way out.

  6.                  Never open doors that are hot to the touch.

  7.                  Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.

  8.                  Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance away from the home.

  9.                  Assign a family member and a backup person to assist infants, older adults or family members with mobility limitations.

  10.              Once you’re out, stay out. Never reenter a burning building. Tell emergency responders if someone is missing.
