Busy Day For The BFD

Posted on September 18, 2009

Having arrived at the BFTC for a drill, the career staff found a PSE&G worker stuck in the bucket of his truck with the boom elevated.  Without any telephone or radio he was unable to call for help.  The truck was in the north parking lot of the Borough Hall and the worker was changing out street lights on the utility poles when a hydraulic line broke, leaving him unable to lower the boom. Controls at the base of the boom were also unresponsive as a large amount of hydraulic fluid had now leaked out of the truck and was on the ground.

A crew of Firefighters Marlon Sahai, Justin Mignogna, Kevin Cook, Darren Orta, and Lieutenant Kirsch, along with Volunteer Firefighters Andrew McGoldrick, Chris Naylis, and Dave Tedesco, operated at the scene to secure the vehicle, control the spill, and remove the worker to the ground level.

After having started their drill, the day crew responded to a reported possible electrical fire on Roosevelt Avenue.  After securing that scene and returning to the Training Center, the Dumont Fire Department requested mutual aid coverage for one engine as their units were operating at a structure fire in Cresskill.  For a short while, Ladder 742 was asked to go on standby to cover Dumont as well.  Engine 743 with a crew of Firefighters Sahai, McGoldrick, Frino, and Tedesco responded to Dumont and would end up operating at fire in a garage on Wyandotte Avenue.

Shortly after picking up from the shortened drill and placing the Ladder back in service, RESCUE 746 was requested to respond to the Cresskill fire scene to provide SCBA air.  Firefighters C. Naylis, S. Naylis, and O. Rynn responded and were released and returned within an hour.  Engine 743 returned from Dumont by 1330 hours.

The day crews would also respond to and investigate a CO call on Wildrose Avenue in the afternoon.
