L.O.D.D. – Charlestown, South Carolina

Last night nine Charleston, South Carolina Firefighters lost their lives while operating at a furniture warehouse fire in Charleston. Preliminary reports indicate a structural collapse of the roof trapped the crews. The Officers and Members of the Bergenfield Fire Department send our prayers and condolences to the families and members of the Charleston, S.C. Fire Department. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

Small Fire In Basement

On Friday night at 21:22 hrs, the Bergenfield FD was dispatched on a general alarm to 42 Sugden Street for a report of smoke in the house. Deputy Chief Byrnes (D2) was first on scene and reported a smoke condition in the house. The first due engine, 745 layed a line from the hydrant and stretched an attack line. Members entered the structure and made their way through the house room to room looking for the source of the fire. Firefighter Nancy Naylis checked the bathroom and found a burned wicker basket next to the commode, a scorch mark on the tile wall and a partially scorched commode as well. The commode tank had exploded out the bottom and extinguished the fire in the wicker basket. The basket and commode were a total loss and there was minor water damage to the upstairs bathroom and hallway as well as minor water damage to the ceilings below. Units operated on scene for about 90 minutes.

Reported Attic Fire

On Monday night at 19:40 hrs, the Bergenfield FD was dispatched on a general alarm to 95 W. Clinton Avenue on a reported attic fire. Captain Kneisler of Alert was responding to his firehouse when the screaming and frantic homeowner flagged him down. He entered the house and made his way to the attic and reported the attic fan motor was on fire. Chief Polandick arrived on scene and established command and sent the first due engine, 745, into the attic to assess the situation. The utilities to the home were secured and the fan was removed from the unit. There was no extension to the home and the smoke was vented. Units were clear of the scene in 45 minutes.

Report Of Building On Fire

On Tuesday night at 19:05 hrs, the Bergenfield FD was dispatched on a reported fire in a building at 26 Columbia Ave. First arriving units found a well involved dumpster fire against the building. First due engine 743 knocked down the fire. The exterior of the building was damaged, but there was no extension to the interior. Units were off the scene in 30 minutes.
